Jules Dumont d'Urville

Jules Sébastien César Dumont d’Urville 1790-1842

Dumont d’Urville joined the French navy at the age of 17, reaching the rank of rear-admiral at the time of his death.

He participated in three voyages to the Pacific region. The second and third were under his command and were at the zenith of French maritime exploration, colonial ambition and scientific endeavours. For more information about Dumont d'Urville please refer to listing under Birds.

The prints coded DD2... are from Dumont d'Urville's first voyage as commander of the Astrolabe, 1826-1829. The results of that voyage were lavishly published between 1830 and 1835. There were eighty finely engraved plates from the Botanique Atlas, of which only four were coloured.
