Joseph Maiden
Joseph Henry Maiden 1859 -1925
Ill health prompted the decision by London-born Maiden to sail for Sydney in 1880.
An expert in economic botany, he began lecturing and writing on botanical subjects and in 1889 and 1890 published several works on the useful properties of Australian plants.
Despite the controversy over this particular publication, he was responsible for a massive output of botanical research and other publications. He had an exceptionally methodical mind and working habits, and by 1896, he was Director of the Botanic Gardens in Sydney and Government Botanist.
Maiden encouraged the use of the Gardens as a resource for public education and was a great advocate for “improving” the aesthetic of the city environment.
