Gracius Broinowski
Gracius Broinowski 1837-1913
Born in Poland Broinowski began his residence in Australia, in the late 1850s, by “jumping ship” near Portland, in Victoria, and swimming ashore, although he was later naturalised in 1886.
After some years engaged in various occupations, in 1880, he and his family finally settled in Sydney, where he taught art. In 1887 Broinowski began to prepare “The Birds of Australia”, which was published between 1887 and 1891. Utilising chromolithographs, this significant publication aimed to bring Australian ornithology to a wider audience than that achieved by the prohibitively expensive and limited number of John Gould hand-coloured lithographs.
“In order to produce an attractive and, at the same time, an accurate representation of each bird as it is in life, all that skilful drawing, good composition, harmonious colouring, and the best methods of modern chromolithography could accomplish, has been done.”
We have a complete set of Broinowski in stock priced from A$75.00 per plate.
